The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial WallThe center piece of The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park is a beautiful 125 foot long black granite wall. This is The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall. It is engraved with the 3,094 men and 1 woman, from Ohio, who lost their lives in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. All names are listed alphabetically by last name.

The top of the wall contains the phrase "Lest We Forget" in gold letters. The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park has undertaken the task to help insure that our veterans will always be remembered for the heroism and bravery.

The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall is the longest free-standing monument in the United States. The wall has no means of support other than its own size and weight. The wall is 125 feet long, and 6 feet high. It is made of 50 polished black granite panels each measuring 72" tall X 30" wide and 8" thick. The wall weighs well over 100,000 pounds and sits atop a seven foot thick, steel reinforced concrete foundation.

The flawless, polished black granite is only found in three locations around the world; India, China and Africa. The black granite used for this wall was quarried in India, same as the national wall.

At the base of the wall, you will often find many keepsakes, such as photos, flowers, letters and poems left by loved ones. These are personal tributes to the heroes and we try to treat them as such. We try to collect as many of these tributes as we can for display at future events. (Due to weather and climate, we cannot guarantee the preservation of these items. If you have an item that you would like stored and used as an event display, please contact us and we will make arrangements to have them stored properly.)

The Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall At Night

The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall At Night

The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park is lit until midnight each night. Visitors are welcomed and even encouraged to visit the park at night. The lit wall and monuments give the park a different feel with the black sky behind it.

Many visitors describe the names as "floating in mid-air" once the sun sets.

The mornings and sunset can be just as amazing. The park takes on a different personality at different times of the day.

Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park - Back Of WallOhio's Military History And The Back Of The Wall

When you walk around to the back of the wall you will see several engravings. These engraved panels display all of the wars that The State Of Ohio has been involved in, beginning with the War of 1812 up to the current war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The scenes depict military personal from the time period as well as a description and history of Ohio's involvement. All of the engraved images are taken from actual photos, with the exception of the Battle of 1812.

There is no mention of The Revolutionary War because Ohio was not a state until March 1, 1803.

There are several blank panels on the back of the wall. In the near future these panels will contain the names of those who were killed from Ohio during The Korean War, The Gulf War and The War On Terrorism.

More information will be available soon concerning the engravings on the back of the wall.
